I found myself enamored with the zesty city of Novi Sad, often touted as Serbia’s ‘Athens of the North’. Nestled on the banks of the Danube River, its culture-rich streets and lively ambiance were a joy to experience. A focal point of my exploration was the Petrovaradin Fortress, which stands as a guardian over the city. I was intrigued to learn that this fortress, often called the “Gibraltar of the Danube”, contains a network of underground tunnels and chambers, many of which remain unexplored to this day.
The city’s bustling Liberty Square provided a delightful contrast to the stoic history of the fortress. Here, surrounded by colorful baroque buildings and the impressive neo-Renaissance City Hall, I felt the pulse of Novi Sad’s modern-day energy and promise. The interplay between the past and present was palpable, from the historical landmarks to the lively cafes and contemporary art spaces.
