Skopje, the capital of North Macedonia, unfolded its treasures before me, with every street and monument echoing stories of resilience and rebirth. The city’s recovery from the devastating 1963 earthquake is a testament to the indomitable spirit of its inhabitants. The Stone Bridge, an age-old emblem spanning the Vardar River, silently narrated tales from the Roman period to present-day Skopje, connecting its diverse past to its revitalized present.

The Old Bazaar drew me in with its medley of Roman, Ottoman, and Byzantine influences, while tantalizing scents from street stalls hinted at the rich culinary legacy of the region. Just a short distance away, the majestic Kale Fortress stood as a sentinel, overseeing the city’s ebb and flow. But the highlight of my journey was the awe-inspiring Matka Canyon. The sheer cliffs and pristine waters of the canyon, juxtaposed against ancient monasteries and caves, captured the essence of North Macedonia — a harmonious blend of natural beauty and historical depth. Skopje, with its vibrant past and stunning landscapes, truly offers a journey like no other.
