Sofia, the capital of Bulgaria, gracefully carries its weight of history on modern shoulders. Established over seven millennia ago, Sofia is one of the oldest cities in Europe. At its core stands the awe-inspiring Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, an emblem of Bulgaria’s Orthodox Christian tradition and an architectural marvel. With its golden domes piercing the skyline, the cathedral is a testament to the city’s resilience and diverse influences over the centuries.
As I meandered through the wide boulevards and quiet alleyways, I was continually struck by Sofia’s harmonious blend of the ancient and the contemporary. The remnants of the Serdica Roman fortifications, integrated seamlessly into the city’s fabric, serve as a constant reminder of Sofia’s rich past. Meanwhile, the bustling street cafes, filled with laughter and conversation, show a city alive and evolving. With the majestic Vitosha Mountain as a backdrop, Sofia offered a unique juxtaposition of urban life against a canvas of natural beauty, inviting introspection and admiration in equal measure.
