My excursion in Cairo, the pulsating heart of Egypt and one of the largest cities in Africa and the Middle East, was an extraordinary journey through time. Cairo, established in the 10th century near the ancient city of Memphis, has long stood as a center of political and cultural life in Egypt. Today, I experienced its profound historical and cultural wealth firsthand.
The day’s adventure began at the iconic Giza Plateau. Here, I rode a camel through the sands, the Pyramids of Giza, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, towering majestically above. The sense of history was palpable as I gazed up at these colossal structures. Coming face-to-face with the enigmatic Sphinx was another surreal moment, its time-worn features evoking centuries of mystery and awe.
Following a traditional Egyptian lunch, my guide, Zeinab, led me to the Egyptian Museum. Zeinab’s knowledge brought to life the museum’s vast collection of artifacts, mummies, and royal treasures. Each exhibit, from Tutankhamun’s golden mask to the less renowned but equally fascinating artifacts, told a story of Egypt’s rich and complex history.
The day concluded at Khan el Khalili bazaar. This bustling marketplace was a vibrant tapestry of colors, scents, and sounds. Wandering through the narrow alleys, I was surrounded by an array of fabrics, handicrafts, and antiques, each piece reflecting the artistic heritage of Egypt.
